Weekly Security and Risk Report 16/03/2022

MAST’s weekly security report issue 323 is available to read now.

In the Gulf of Guinea, Nigerian officials are investigating the process behind the funding of the country’s Deep Blue maritime security project. Naval exercise, Obangame Express 2022 has commenced in Nigeria’s waters and the wider Gulf, and the Italian Navy has deployed a vessel to the region as part of the EU’s anti-piracy efforts.

In the Indian Ocean Region, the UN mandate to operate in Somali waters has now ended, meaning that foreign warships are unable to pursue pirates outside international waters. In Tanzania, a retrial for seven pirates sentenced to life in prison for their role in piracy has been ordered.

In European waters, Russia maintains its grip on the Black Sea, with the Sea of Azov now open to local, Russian traffic. There have been a number of fatalities in the Mediterranean in the past week.
