In the Gulf of Guinea, there has been one report of a vessel boarding and it is thought that six crew have been kidnapped. It comes as politicians in Nigeria urge the government to do more to rescue hostages around Lagos and the Niger Delta. The ex-Director General of NIMASA has offered his thoughts on how security can be improved at Nigerian anchorages.
In the Indian Ocean Region, the Combined Maritime Forces have reported that they seized a record $189 million in illegal narcotics in the region in 2021. There are discussions surrounding the continued UN mission in the Indian Ocean and Total has re-opened one of its offices in Mozambique.
In European waters, there have been no significant Channel crossings in the period observed, although the UK government is facing several legal cases around the problem. Libya’s Coast Guard has again been accused of mistreatment in the Mediterranean and the IOM has released figures for the year to date.
