HMS Trent is bound for the Gulf of Guinea where it will strengthen ties between the Royal Navy and nations of the region by supporting with maritime security training and security patrols. In Nigeria, the first quarter of 2021 saw oil pipeline attacks up by 25% compared to the same period in 2020, with more than 151 incidents of vandalism reported.

In the Indian Ocean, a tanker reported a suspicious approach in the Bab el-Mandeb strait last week. Kenya has declared it will not recognise the maritime boundary judgement made by the International Court of Justice in its dispute with Somalia.

This weekend saw 1,115 migrants cross the English Channel onboard forty small boats, signifying the severity of the ongoing migrant crisis.
