Weekly Security and Risk Report 08/12/2021

MAST’s weekly security report issue 310 is available to read now.

In the Gulf of Guinea, there has been one report of a vessel pursued by suspected pirates. Nigeria’s Navy has arrested a large number of suspected oil thieves and recovered illegally refined oil products. In light of recent events, European shipowners have called for increased security in the region. BIMCO, meanwhile, has issued a new contract for security vessels.

In the Indian Ocean Region, the UN has extended its anti-piracy resolution, warning that piracy remains a threat. The authorities in Mozambique have seized a ‘strange’ vessel, according to reports.

In European waters, Frontex has deployed a surveillance aircraft to monitor the English Channel for small boat traffic. France has rejected an offer from the UK to place British police on French beaches to deter migrants. Rescuers have saved a further 100 people in the Channel.
