Weekly Security and Risk Report 08/09/2021

MAST’s weekly security report issue 297 is available to read now.

There have been reports of a kidnapping onboard a vessel in Gabon over the weekend, with two crew members injured during the attack.

In the past week, one of West Africa’s leading maritime researchers, Dr Ifesinachi Okafor, has called for more action to be taken on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. With the practice resulting in an estimated 10x bigger financial loss compared to piracy and the added environmental impacts of IUU fishing, Okafor criticised the lack of action from the UN Security Council.

The weekend saw high numbers of migrants crossing the English Channel, and steady streams of crossings with the favourable weather conditions. Unfortunately, there has also been an ongoing loss of lives across the Mediterranean.
