In the Gulf of Guinea, a fishing vessel was attacked at the end of December 2021, with one crew reportedly killed and others kidnapped. The Nigerian Navy has been in action, breaking up a kidnapping ring, killing 10 suspects in a gun battle.

In the Indian Ocean Region, the Houthi movement in Yemen has seized a UAE-flagged vessel, accusing it of carrying military equipment. The US Navy seized a huge number of smuggled weapons in December, and US Coast Guard assets have seized around $4 million in illegal narcotics.

In European waters, attention been on people smugglers in the English Channel. In Greece, four people smugglers have been arrested after a small boat capsized with loss of life in the Mediterranean.
