Weekly Security and Risk Report 03/11/2021

MAST’s weekly security report issue 305 is available to read now.

The past week has seen two reported incidents in the Gulf of Guinea, with at least three crew believed to have been kidnapped by pirates. In an additional incident, the Nigerian Navy rescued a hostage who had been kidnapped ashore but taken on to local waterways. New powers, which would allow the Nigerian Navy to prosecute maritime crimes, have also been proposed.

In the Indian Ocean, the Iranian Navy claims to have foiled a new piracy attempt in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The incident has not been officially confirmed. The UK Carrier Strike Group has conducted drills with the Indian Navy, and the US Navy has run unmanned surface task force tests.

In European waters, The Times has reported that October 2021 saw six times as many migrants cross the English Channel compared with 2020. Two migrants are believed to have drowned in an incident off the Essex coast, while in the Mediterranean, 382 migrants onboard a Turkish-flagged cargo ship were rescued by Greece.
